Fall Colour Report

The FALL COLOUR PROGRESSION REPORT is posted each Tuesday and Friday
during the beautiful fall colour season in the province of Ontario.
This is the report for Thursday, October 14, 2004

**Northern Ontario

In the far northwestern region of Ontario, there is considerable leaf fall from Dryden to Kenora and across to the Fort Frances area and into the Thunder Bay region, due to heavy wind and frost. There are a few remaining areas of yellow and gold in the poplar, birch and aspen trees.

The north shore of Lake Superior, across to the Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma region, the colours are now past peak. Despite some wind and rain, there are still some nice colours in the area ranging from bright red and burgundy to orange.

The Agawa Canyon Tour train adventure, out of Sault Ste. Marie, is always an ideal fall colour excursion. The train adventure continues through October 16th.

In the northeastern region, from Kirkland Lake area to Temagami, the colour is now at peak with bright yellow and gold from the birch and poplar trees. There is 10% leaf fall in the area. Maple trees are offering some nice pockets of colour along highway 66 to Kirkland Lake.

An ideal fall colour-viewing area is the fire tower lookout in Temagami. Highway 11 south of Temagami to North Bay is still offering some nice colour.

The colour is past peak in the Sudbury area, with some pockets of yellow and gold remaining. Highway 637 to Killarney continues to be a good fall colour route.

The North Bay region has the colours past peak. Dull yellow and gold with some red and rust colours continue to dominate the region. Highways 524 and 534 are still offering some nice colour at this time.

Colours are past peak but still nice from North Bay, south to Burk’s Falls along highway 11. The Mattawa area has the colours just past peak as well.

In Algonquin Park, the colours are now well past peak with about 60% leaf fall. There are still pockets of burgundy, orange and yellow along the highway 60 corridor. One of the ideal locations, to enjoy the colours in Algonquin, is the view from the observation deck, at the ¨world class〃 Algonquin visitor centre, along the highway 60 corridor.

**Ottawa Region

The colour is now at peak in the Ottawa area. Dominant colours are bright red, gold and yellow. Colours are reported as ¨Fabulous〃. The colours are very nice along Moodie Drive and a walk along the beautiful Rideau Canal is always outstanding during the fall. The Experimental Farm Arboretum area is offering nice colour as well.

**Eastern Ontario

In the Kemptville area, the colours are past peak. There are some nice splashes of red and orange in the maple trees and yellow from the poplars. The Pembroke area has the colour past peak at this time. The area continues to offer some pockets of red and orange from the maple trees.

Good viewing areas continue to be highways 512, 515, 28 and 514. The Brockville, 1000 Island area, the colour is at peak, with some brilliant pockets of red and orange, along the 1000 Island Parkway. A cruise of the beautiful 1,000 islands is always a great way to enjoy the fall colour, in this region, with cruise dates running through October 17 th .

**Central Ontario

In the Parry Sound region, the colour is past peak and muted, along highway 124 and highway 69, north of the town. The colour is now just past peak as well in the northern Muskoka and northern Haliburton regions.

The southern Muskoka and Haliburton regions have the colours at peak. The area is experiencing beautiful pockets of deep red, orange and yellow. A tour of the Muskoka region from the Bala (highway 169) area, to Port Carling (highway 118) and into Bracebridge, around Lake Muskoka, is outstanding at this time.

Keep in mind the very popular, Bala Cranberry Festival, gets underway Friday, October 15 th and runs through Sunday the 17 th . The Kawartha Lakes region has advanced to peak colour change. The region is offering brilliant red, orange and yellow at this time. Highways 28, north to Bancroft and 121, north of Fenelon Falls are especially colourful at this time.

The Barrie, Huronia region across to Collingwood, Blue Mountain area, the colours are at peak. There is simply outstanding colour throughout this area.

Ideal viewing locations, in the central region of Ontario, include the Fire Tower Lookout in Dorset, Lions Lookout in Huntsville, the Horseshoe Valley area north east of Barrie, the Ridge Road region east of Barrie taking in the hamlets of Oro Station, Shanty Bay and Hawkestone.

The lookouts at Scenic Caves in Collingwood are outstanding as well. Several central Ontario boat cruises continue through this upcoming weekend (Oct16, 17) as well. They offer a great fall colour outing.

**Niagara Falls Region

The colours are advancing, in the Niagara region. There is a 40% colour change, but keep in mind, the beautiful drive along the Niagara Parkway from Niagara on the Lake to Fort Erie is outstanding for fall colour touring.

Also the view from the Brock Monument lookout at Queenston, to the north, along the Niagara River is always outstanding, but especially nice in the fall.

**Southwestern Region

The Owen Sound region, in particular the Inglis Falls and Harrison Park areas and across to the beautiful Beaver Valley, the colour is at peak. The drive into the Beaver Valley from Grey County Road 4, in the south along County Road 13, is outstanding during the fall. Bright orange and red dominate the area.

The Hockley Valley area across to Caledon is featuring peak colour, with some beautiful pockets of burnt orange and yellow. The Elora Gorge and Fergus area is offering peak colour. The dominant colours are orange and gold with some pockets of bright red from the maples.

The Royal Botanical Gardens, a beautiful fall colour destination, is offering a 50% colour change at this time. The gardens are offering a nice mix of red, orange and yellow.

The colours have advanced to a 30% change at Pinery Provincial Park along the Lake Huron shoreline. Colours are mainly bright yellow in the region with some red for contrast in the sumacs. A hike of Pinery’s trails is a wonderful way to enjoy the fall colours of the area.

Further into the southwest, the St. Clair Parkway area offers a wonderful mix of trees and a 60% colour change at this time. The area recently experienced its first frost and colours have advanced quickly. The region is offering a nice mix of bright red, rust, orange and yellow.

**Toronto

There is a 35% colour change in the Toronto region at this time. There are some nice pockets of colour along the Don Valley Parkway, Black Creek Parkway, High Park area as well as along the lakeshore parklands.
